Seva Spark 2013

This past weekend we had the honor and pleasure of contributing and supporting Seva Food Bank’s Seva Spark Gala in launch of their brand, spanking new location and hub!

The Seva Food Bank provides safe, nutritious and culturally-appropriate food to low- income families living in Mississauga’s L5B and L5C postal codes. An initiative of Sikhs Serving Canada, a registered charitable not-for-profit organization, their mission is to positively impact local communities by acting on the basic Sikh tenets of sarbat da bhalla(the well being of all) and seva (selfless service). They serve clients and welcome volunteers from all faiths, backgrounds, and cultures.

In the weeks leading to the event, the AWE team assisted with various logistics including coordination with vendors and providing advice and expertise on how to pull together an event of this size and scope, in a not so conventional space.  The “venue” was in fact their brand new site and as you’ll see was transformed into an industrial chic event space with the wonderful work and support of Dream Party Decor.  In addition, the AWE team banded together on the day of the event to pull it all through, in terms of event set up, and the coordination of dinner service, bar set up, volunteer management and assistance with the programming of speakers and entertainment.

It was great to be a part of such a great community initiative, and since we love to collaborative with like minded individuals it was the perfect event and cause to support.

Here are some visual highlight!

Sneak Peak into an AWE Engagement Party!

Today, I’m happy to share one of my own events with all of you – my Engagement Party!

As a planner planning your own event has it’s own slew of stresses and although it’s hard to believe – I faced a lot of the same emotions and predicaments most brides go through as well!  When planning my own events, it went on the back burner – especially when my focus was on my brides. My family turned to me or almost expected that everything would be taken care of by me, since it’s what I do, in turn putting a lot of pressure on the shoulders of a couple of people!

Going through the wheels and motions of planning one of my own events has actually been a blessing – now I’ve TRULY felt first hand what feelings and emotions, what family stresses my own brides face!  What’s my vision, do I even have one? What should I wear? What should my look be? Am I creating a memorable experience for my guests? And am I forgetting anything?!?!  All of these emotions and thoughts I felt as I went about planning this event.  In the end, I couldn’t have been happier with how it unfolded thanks to the wonderful people around me – my family, dear friends, my supportive fiancé and of course event team that helped pull everything together!

Here’s a quick snippet of my engagement event that I’m happy to have all of you be a part of!

It’s Not Just About the Parties | The After Hours Job!

Come Fall & Winter the events and wedding industry goes into event overload with Grand Openings, Launches, Open Houses and Industry Nights.  In an industry where most of our events take place in the summer months, we see a bit of a lull before we go head first into corporate events and booking for the following season(s).

This week was especially exhausting as our team attended a number of events and parties.  Now if you follow us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter you may get the impression of “is all these girls do is party?”  Well we do, we are event planners after all! However, these parties have a lot more meaning and take a lot more work than it appears!  What do these parties entail and why do we “have” to go? Well it’s a part of our job – just like any other service based job ours involves research, staying on top of upcoming trends and building relationships.

So, attending these events allows us to see emerging trends in decor, florals, color palettes and also simulates our creative juices on the next big thing we can do for our upcoming weddings.  In addition, we’re able to see what’s trending in terms of food and beverages – what are some new ways of service, presentation, or ideas for signature drinks – all which add value to our current and future brides and grooms!  During the summer months we don’t really get a chance to really connect with our industry partners and so here we run into new people we’d like to work with or who can offer our clients a great product or service and we meet old friends whom we catch up with, all in all making our relationships stronger for – you guessed it, our clients!  It also gives our team a time to connect, talk about us and what skills we need to improve on and how we can function better together, all in all giving our clients a highly efficient, expert team as the backbone to their events.  So yes, while we do enjoy the mixing and mingling, the food and the drinks we are still working – but hey doesn’t every job have it’s perks?

If you missed all the action, here’s a visual summary from our week out on the town!

Happy Planning!

Event Review: eventConnect

This week I attended eventConnect – a networking session that brings together the industry and provides an opportunity for aspiring meeting planners to produce an event.  It was my first time attending and I definitely had a great time meeting new people but also catching up with industry friends. Here’s more on the event!

Brassai 1 Location, Location, Location! Held at the trendy Brassaii in King West, the resto-lounge was perfect for the chic crowd that it attracted.  Having a private space to host the event gave it intimacy and exclusivity.  The venue is perfect for intimate weddings, wedding rehearsal or even perhaps a trendy bridal shower.

#OmNomNom ~ For event planners food should and must be a priority, especially with “foodie trend” that has had global impact.  The event served up 5 bite sized treats include a Cocktail Shrimp, two varieties of sliders (Roasted Chicken & Beef), a cheese infused treat for the veggies and a mini cupcake.  The taste and frequency of service was great, however I do wish they served up another or had an equal amount of vegetarian delights for all!

Meeting the Experts ~ As a planner I know I am always developing each event that I execute.  In the events industry you never stop learning and if you think have learnt it all – you are definitely wrong!  eventConnect not only provided an outlet to network with my peers but it also included an interactive panel of experts speaking on “How You Found Success in the Industry”.  This session was not only insightful but inspiring.  The panel included Paras Mehta, Sandy Biback & Trevor Lui – all inspirational leaders with a wealth of knowledge to share.  Coming from diverse backgrounds in design, corporate meeting planning and venue operations, the panel was dynamic and I went away with some key pieces of information that will only help me help my clients!

Take Away ~ It’s so important to be involved in your industry.  The more people you meet and the more you learn will only make you better at what you do.  In the end offering the highest level of expertise to our clients is what they are paying us for and events like this only elevate us.  I encourage everyone to collaborate and share – it will only raise the bar and make our industry and our services invaluable!Networking1
